Sexual problems or sexual dysfunctions are problems that occur in any phase of an individual’s sexual response cycle, preventing him or the couple from getting sexual satisfaction. Sexual problems associated with men include: delayed ejaculation, diminished libido, inability to achieve or maintain erection and premature ejaculation. For many years, men have believed that these problems are just normal part of aging, unfortunately this is not the case.

So what causes sexual problems in men?

Generally, sexual problems may develop gradually or occur out of the blue as a partial or total inability to engage in one or more stages of a sexual act. Sexual problems in men result from either emotional, or physical problems.

Emotional causes can either be interpersonal or psychological problems. Usually, interpersonal problems can result from relationship or marital problems, lack of trust, performance anxiety and even lack of open communication in a relationship.

Psychological factors that cause sexual problems in men include: sexual fears, past sexual trauma, depression, feeling of guilt, and even work related stress. Men who are depressed at work, usually lose interest in sex and their performance also decrease. This may reduce their motivation to try to have sex all together, making their partners to be sexually unfulfilled.

Physical causes:

Sexual problems in men can also result from physical related issues. Physical factors can also be medical related factors which include: diabetes, heart and vascular diseases, hormonal imbalances, neurological disorders and chronic diseases like liver or kidney failure. Some medicines used to treat some illnesses are also known to cause sexual problems in men.

These medicines include: diabetes drugs, antidepressants and some blood pressure medications. Usually, these medicines have some side effects that may include reduction in sexual desire and sometimes erectile dysfunction. Pain and physical injuries also cause sexual problems in men.

Some illness like back pain, shingles, arthritis, and injuries on the penis can cause pain that can result to uncomfortable sexual intercourse.

Some of these conditions can also change a man’s moods and attitudes which results to sexual dysfunctions like lack of interest to have sex. In addition to this, surgical procedures especially those results in removal of a part or whole of man’s prostate can also lead to impotence. Old age can therefore be classified as an unpreventable cause of sexual problem.

Sexual problems can also result from bad lifestyle or habits. For instance, men with habits of drinking alcohol in excess and those who smoke are prone to develop sexual disorders. Research has shown that, nicotine substances in cigarettes interrupt the flow of blood in the penis, leading to late arousal. In addition to that, excessive use of alcohol can cause impotency.

As men grow up, they experience changes in their sexual function, as a result of drop in testosterone levels. These changes include: fewer sperm production, decrease in the force of ejaculation, increase in recovery time and erections may be not be hard enough. Old age can therefore be classified as an unpreventable cause of sexual problems.

In conclusion, there are several causes of sexual problems in men. Some of these causes are preventable while other just occur naturally. These problems can cause distress in a man and problems in a relationship.

Fortunately, most sexual problems are treatable through medication while others just disappear as time goes by. However, it is important to talk a doctor to know what the cause of sexual problem in a man; so that the necessary procedures and treatments can be administered.
